Fetal Doppler Gel
Welcome to BabyHeartMonitorUK.co.uk. Your online resource for choosing a baby heart monitor.
Baby heart monitors work by emitting low frequency ultrasound waves through a transducer, which then pass through your skin and tissue and bounce off the foetus. This bounce is translated by the doppler into a sound which is then played through headphones or an in-built speaker. In order for this to work, a specially formulated gel must always be used on the area you are applying the probe to.
While many brands of home fetal doppler supply gel with their product, not all do. Even if the baby heartbeat monitor does come with gel, it is usually only supplied in fairly small quantities. While 250ml is enough to suit some people's needs you may find you run short if you are using it regularly or are using your doppler during more than one pregnancy. Therefore you may need to find a supplier where additional bottles of gel can be purchased. You may like to try eBay or Amazon, where ultrasound gel can be bought for just a few pounds.
Never use your baby heart monitor with anything other than the specially formulated gel, however tempting. Not only will this be ineffective, you are highly likely to cause permanent damage to the sensitive probe.
